Enjoy
staying at the Eden Valley Centre with your group. Our location in the Eden Valley on the Lake Districts eastern boundary is second to none in terms of access and accessibility. Eden is a place of open space, clean lakes and rivers and charming sandstone villages strung across the hills and small dales like a string of pearls. It is a landscape of superlatives; craggy hills, becks and woodlands nestling between the towering Pennines and the Lakeland fells. It is perfect for adventure as well as for fun and relaxed days taking in everything that is on offer. The whole area is crammed with things to do. There are numerous places to visit without the hustle and bustle that is so often associated with the busier attractions: at Ullswater you can cruise on the Lake without the ‘Madding Crowd’ of Windermere. The Centre This was originally a small farm called Whin Garth which dates back to 1743, whilst the site itself has been occupied since Viking times. The house is fully-modernised with central heating and all conveniences including a good drying room. The house is surrounded by gardens and an orchard and has parking for several minibuses and cars. Beyond the car park is a meadow for games as well as a small wood bordered by a stream which we use for campcraft and campfire. The stream is excellent for ‘dipping’ and has a wide range of life including a colony of European Crayfish. Sleeping is in small rooms furnished with bunks and sleeping in two, four or eight bedded units to a total of 36+. In addition there are two study rooms and a spacious Common Room where meals are taken. Visiting staff have their own rooms and Staff Room with tea and coffee making facilities. Food at the Centre is very good . Wholesome meals are prepared by our two cooks taking into account special needs or dietary requirements. What we do.The Centre runs a wide range of Courses for groups of all ages. It is possible for you to have a Full Activity course where each day your group takes part in different exciting activities or else you may prefer some activities mixed with visits to places of interest. We cater for groups of all ages, even as young as Infant (Key Stage 1). Our Staff have qualifications in Teaching and also in Special Needs Provision as well as in National Governing Body of Sport Awards. The Centre is licensed by the Adventurous Activities Licensing Authority. This means you can be sure of the best quality provision and practice in all of our activities. The Instructional Staff are all permanent, salaried staff rather than enthusiastic amateurs. They are all qualified and totally dedicated to providing safety with fun. Groups returning to the Centre like to see the same staff they befriended on their first visit. Where we do it? Our location is superb. Within walking distance of the Centre are forests, river gorges to trek through and crags for climbing and abseiling on. There are several Orienteering Courses nearby. Country walks and lovely footpaths abound. You can even explore our secret stone circles and Bronze Age cairns. The hills of the Geltsdale Fells are ten minutes drive away with a short bus ride to the Lake District’s Northern and Eastern fells. Our Water sports Centre is at Talkin Tarn where we have two boathouses, showers and a Rescue Dory. The tarn is ideal for introducing groups to Kayaking and Open Canoeing. The tarn is one mile in circumference and set in lovely beech woodland with the Geltsdale fells as a backcloth. Our qualified staff offer Caving trips in North Yorkshire/South Cumbria. If visits are required, then there is a bewildering choice: Hadrian's Wall, Whinlatter Forest Centre, Ullswater Lake Steamer, Carlisle Castle and Cathedral, Lakeland Bird of Prey Centre, Ostrich World, Lowther Wildlife Park to name but a few. “The Eden
Valley Experience”This is tied up with our whole philosophy. We aim to provide the best to all young people. Our staff are dedicated to excellence and this includes friendly hospitality to visiting staff and young people. We want everyone to experience high standards of care and attention. The activities and challenges are also carefully structured so that no one feels threatened - we match the challenge to the individual so that success is the outcome. The Great Outdoors is a powerful motivator and the excitement and stimulation often leads to a blossoming of personalities that have in the past been held back by repeated failures in other areas of life. Our “Success Model” has been the major attraction for groups to return year after year. We invite you to share this experience - its great! The Eden Valley Centre How can we do this?
