| The council, or LCVYS for short, is an administrative and communications umbrella for
some 80 plus Voluntary Youth Service Organisations currently active in Lancashire. These range from large Church, Club based and Uniformed Organisations to smaller Special Need Organisations. Founded in 1942 to provide opportunities for young people whose parents were fully engaged in war work, a Local Education Authority Monitoring Exercise carried out in 1992 revealed that, 50 years later, Member Organisations had in excess of 10,250 adult volunteers serving over 92,000 young people. Between them Member Organisations provided in excess of 133,854 ‘bed nights’ of residential accommodation for young people - the equivalent of housing for 366 young people.
