Emergency Aid for Appointed Persons
Ideal for smaller workplaces presenting few health and safety risks, where a
nominated person is required to take charge in the even of illness or accident.
Fully qualified First Aiders in large organisations can also benefit from
additional support from Appointed Persons - especially relevant where the
workplace consists of many floors, or work is operated in shifts. Includes
basic lifesaving first aid and the relevant regulations.
Basic Web Site Design
This one day course is designed for both those Organisations that have a basic
web site but want to know how to make the best of it and also for those who are
considering having a web site but want to know the best way of getting it set
up. Covers hosting and where to get the best value, what facilities are
available and more importantly which ones you need and don't need. Site content,
layout and functionality. Also covers guidelines on child protection, what you
should and shouldn't display.
A follow-up session at the participants own venue is included in the fee to give
one to one practical help on your web site using your PC.
BCU Canoeing
Accommodation will be in Waterside Wood Chalet, the residential block at
Moor Crag. Limited parking please share transport.
Friday evening to Sunday afternoon. Participants must arrive by 8pm. Depart 4pm
onwards on Sunday.
The course is aimed at Leaders and Instructors who may be either novices, or
have attended a previous water activity course at Moor Crag, or those with some
experience but needing assessment under the new water activity rules. BCU I RYA
Assessors will be available throughout the weekend and where the standard
required be attained by a participant, the appropriate certificate will be
awarded in accordance with the new POR requirements. Participants must send
photocopies of their current qualifications, and total experience when
submitting their application form. The BCU I RYA assessors have informed
us that such information would not be sufficient in its own right to gain
qualification, therefore, so that assessment can take place it is essential that
participants attend for the full weekend.
Bring Sleeping Bag & pillow if
required. Tea towel, 2, personal drying towels, Wet suit, long john; (short wet
suit jackets are not suitable for canoeing). Please bring canoe top or suitable
waterproof preferably with warm clothing underneath. All buoyancy aids
supplied.
The course fee includes accommodation, food, instruction, and use of craft and
safety equipment. It does not include transport, or cost of logbooks, certificates
for those qualifying for same. NOTE we do NOT have any wet suits or
sailing suits for hire.
The course is held at the Scouts Water Activity Centre on the Shores of Lake
Windermere.
The course offers a broad spectrum of canoeing skills, which can be
tailored to suit the competency of each participant. We can offer 1, 2 & 3
star awards together with Canoe Safety Test - which are required to progress on
to the BCU Coaching Awards. The course will also cover rescue techniques, group
control, safety on the water and canoeing games. Most of the time is spent on
the water, with theory sessions in the evening. Don't worry, the whole course is
run in a very relaxed manner with the emphasis on learning in an enjoyable
environment. The course is based on Lake Windermere, with accommodation in a
modern chalet with excellent catering provided.
Build a Computer
Start with an empty box and build a working computer. You will learn how to load
the operating system and configure the system. This course is designed for
people who know the basics about using computers but who are not confident about
adding hardware or loading programmes, and would like to know all about
"What makes computers tick" - It might even inspire you to build your
own! All the bits provided - Just bring yourself.

for Absolute Beginners
Many people are discouraged from starting to use a computer for fear that it is
too difficult, that they might break something expensive or that they are not in
control. Don't Worry, this course is for absolute beginners and introduces
adults to computers in a clear, straightforward and encouraging way, which will
leave you wanting more. Topics covered will include mouse skills, keyboarding,
text entry and editing, printing and saving your work. An introduction to the
internet will demonstrate how easy it is to use.

Databases
using MS Access
Expert advice on the design and construction of databases is offered for anyone
with a knowledge of Windows and word processing. Using Microsoft Access, the
course will include work with tables, editing data, manipulating data with
queries and creating and editing forms and reports.

E-mail
and Outlook
Spend a day exploring Outlook and coming to grips with e-mail. Learn how to send
and receive e-mails, how to print e-mails and attach files. Use Outlook to
organise your life and your address book.

2 Day
Emergency First Aid
A 2-day course for instructors and outdoor people, giving recognised training
for MLTB, SPSA, BOF, RYA, BCU etc. The course will take place at the Anderton
Centre on Rivington reservoir near Chorley, training provided by HSE approved
trainers and successful completion of the course results in the Rescue &
Emergency care certificate which is valid for three years. There will also be an
opportunity to complete a further 2-day course to obtain the HSE First Aid at
Work qualification.
Firework Safety Course
Looking at doing a firework display for Bonfire night or at New Year?
Whether it is a small group armed with a biscuit tin or you are looking at a
large Group event with thousands of pounds worth of fireworks, this is the
course for you. Run by Quick Silver Fireworks Company, this course covers
Firework types and effects, Site plans & Layout, Risk assessment & Legal,
Rigging / on site layout, Students practical firing session, Debrief &
Questions. The only LCVYS course that will be guaranteed to go with a bang!
Get Crafty
Run by West Lancashire Scouts, this Craft "Taster Day" is being run at
Waddecar Scout Camp Site and included both demonstrations and hands-on
practical work covering a multitude of craft topics. All the materials
required are provided along with the ability to obtain sufficient materials
to take your skills back to your organisation and practise them with your
young people.
GNAS Archery
Leader Course
This course is aimed at all those who wish to learn how to instruct archery to
young people. It covers the correct way to teach, insight into equipment, what
equipment is available and so on. The course is residential over two weekends
and is held at Littledale Scout Camp Site near Lancaster. Applicants need to be
over 18.

Introduction to Counselling
The course aims to introduce students to the basic concepts of counselling and
to key counselling skills. The course is designed for beginners and is suitable
for those with no prior knowledge or experience of counselling skills. The
course will be delivered through a mixture of theoretical and practical work.
There will be an emphasis on practical exercises and role plays to allow
students to gain practical experience of using key counselling skills. Through
this course students will develop their skills in listening, responding &
reflecting, developing empathy and respecting persons.

multiple recipients.

you can create eye-catching greetings cards, business cards and newsletters for
your group or Organisation using Microsoft Publisher. Learn to be creative with
your computer on one of these beginners courses. Course takes place on Mondays
from 10am-4pm at Alston Hall, Longridge. Tutor: Toby Weymouth

can help you. You will never be lost for words again.
Have you got a neglected spreadsheet package sitting crying in the corner of
your desktop? Come along and discover how your computer can take the boredom out
of repetitive calculations and produce tables to impress! Run on Mondays, June
& September for an Introduction, 9th July for Advanced. Takes place 10am-4pm
at Alston Hall, Longridge.
Mountain
Bike Leader 1
Level 1 of the National Mountain Bike Leader Award Scheme is designed for anyone
interested in taking groups of mountain bikers out on single day trips in
non-mountainous and non-technical terrain. It is suitable for these areas
throughout the UK and Ireland. Non-Technical terrain includes roads, fire tracks,
forestry roads, cycle paths and other suitable ways where route selection is not
required.
This course is designed to enhance or enable you to to acquire knowledge of
topics such as group management skills, route planning, ride preparation, basic
maintenance and navigation within a non-technical mountain bike environment.
During the course you are given: Leadership tuition and learning opportunities,
Personal proficiency test, A manual containing Extensive course notes, log book,
proficiency test information, Level 1 assessment criteria, candidate support
network information.
Potential applicants should have: an interest in mountain bike leading, one
years regular mountain bike experience, experience of leading groups of people
in a formal capacity (Although not necessarily in mountain biking), be able to
complete a mountain bike ride of at least 20Km over 3 hours, hold a valid and
appropriate First Aid certificate.
The courses are normally over the period of a weekend and different venues
around the Country are used.

Leader 2
Level 2 of the National Mountain Bike Leader Award Scheme is designed for anyone
interested in taking groups of mountain bikers out on single day trips in
non-mountainous terrain including technical and non-technical riding. It
is suitable for these areas throughout the UK and Ireland. Non-Technical terrain
includes roads, fire tracks, forestry roads, cycle paths and other suitable ways
where route selection is not required. Technical terrain occurs where specific
route selection takes place and includes riding such as single track.
This course is designed to enhance or enable you to to acquire knowledge of
topics such as group management skills, route planning, ride preparation,
maintenance and navigation.
During the course you are given: Extensive leadership tuition and learning
opportunities, Personal proficiency test, A manual containing Extensive course
notes, log book, proficiency test information, Level 2 assessment criteria,
candidate support network information.

Mountain Leader Training
This course is run over a series of three weekends to give the participants the
required number of hours of training. Before the course, participants should
have completed and logged at least 20 days mountain walking. A First Aid
Certificate (Not First Response) is also required.
This series of courses is run by West Lancashire Scouts and is held at Great
Tower Scout camp site in the Lake District. The first weekend is residential and
the subsequent two weekends are camping.

presentation using words, pictures and sounds. Use the LCD projector, print the
presentation to acetate and create accompanying handouts. Feel more confident
when giving presentations. This course is suitable for people with a basic
computer knowledge.

Public Speaking
Banish those fears and gain confidence in a very relaxed and supportive
environment. The thought of speaking in public can be frightening to even the
most confident of us. Most of us at some time in our lives are expected to
"get on our feet and say a few words" maybe at AGMs, courses or just
in our meeting environment. Each delegate will be given the maximum opportunity
to practice and maximise their potential.

Rescue Emergency Care First Aid
Run for us by the Outdoor Activities Service, this course is suitable for
anyone who requires a First Aid certificate for their MLTB, NCA, RYA, BOF
courses.
Course includes all meals, course handbook and certificates and is
residential at the YHA in Manchester.
The 8th December course in the Lake District has been specially commissioned
by LCVYS, is residential at Moor Crag and will be aimed at both those
dealing with young people and Water Activities and those on land-based
activities. If a large percentage of the course participants specialise in
one of those subjects, the course will deal more specifically with those
topics. Very much a hands-on course!
RYA Instructors Course
The first part of this course is a 2 day pre-assessment in the Lake District
on Lake Windermere and is residential at Waterside Wood, the West Lancashire
Scout's Water Activity Centre. Saturday comprises of a familiarisation
session and the pre-assessment is on the Sunday.
Those who satisfactorily complete this pre-assessment may then continue onto
the remaining two weekends of the course which are on the 10-11th November
and 8-9 December, both at the same centre.
Applicants should already hold a minimum of RYA Level 3 (but be up to level
5 standard) and RYA Powerboat level 2 and a valid First Aid Certificate.
The cost of £40.00 covers ALL 3 weekends
RYA Powerboating
Tuition in the following Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Power boating courses
are offered. Introduction to Power boating Level 1. National Powerboat
Certificate Level 2. Safety Boat Course and training and testing is given on the
Euro Regs for Inland Waterways.
Level 1 - Introduction to Power boating. The aim of this course is to
provide
a practical introduction to boat handling and safety in powerboats.
Level 2 - National Powerboat Certificate. This course provides the skills
and background knowledge needed by the competent powerboat driver and is the
basis of the International Certificate of Competence.
Safety Boat - RYA Safety Boat Course. This course introduces the
techniques used in powerboats escorting racing fleets of dinghies, windsurfers
and canoes, providing safety and rescue cover for training fleets, and assisting
in race management.
Tuition is provided in both planning boats and displacement and the certificates
issued will be endorsed to show the type(s) of boat in which the training took
place.
All safety equipment is provided for these courses, all the student need bring,
along with a good sense of humour, is sufficient warm clothing, that may get
wet, for the duration of the course, some old trainers and a set of waterproofs
would be a good idea. If you have your own wet-suits etc then of course bring
them along. A number of wet-suits and waterproofs are available at the centre if
required. A full kit list is supplied with the joining instructions.
RYA Sailing.
Currently sailing tuition is offered in both Dinghies and Keelboats, using a
variety of boats, to Royal Yachting Association (RYA) standards for Levels 1,2
and 3. The scheme is progressive and it is recommended that if you are a
newcomer to the sport that you begin at Level 1 as you cannot learn the more
advanced skills until the basic techniques are mastered.
Level 1 - Start Sailing. This courses is to provide a brief taste of
sailing for novices. By the end of the course, participants will have had a
short introduction to the sport of sailing, including basic boat handling
techniques and essential background knowledge.
Level 2 - Basic Skills. By the end of this course, the successful sailor
will be safety conscious, have a basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of
sailing without an instructor on board in light winds.
Level 3 - Improving Techniques. After Level 3 training the successful
sailor will have a competent, safe, practical approach to the sailing of small
boats and will be capable of making seamanlike decisions in moderate conditions.
Described above are the adult schemes, there are similar RYA courses on offer
especially for youngsters. The Young Sailors Scheme is designed to be more manageable
for youngsters, and taught in "bite-sized" chunks, easily mastered and
achieved.
